The Rwandan Genocide

During the Rwandan Genocide

During the genocide, the Hutus killed about 800,000 people, mostly the Tutsis. Tall Hutus were mistaken for Tutsis so they were killed as well. Throughout the 100 days of massacres, the people had suffered intensely. The armed Hutu militia with guns, machetes, and grenades, started to kill the citizens. In addition, all residents had to carry an identification card that has information about their ethnic background. The bodies of Tutsis were thrown in rivers, often the Kagera River, with their killers saying that they were being sent back to Ethiopia. Local officers assisted by making suitable places available for their slaughter, such as schools. The Tutsis were separated from the Hutus and was hacked with machetes at the roadside. The killers have included someone the victim knew like their neighbors, work-mates, former friends, and sometimes relatives through marriage. However, there also were people the victims didn’t know. The families and politicians sent out a plead for protection to the U.N. peacekeeping force due to that they were terrified. As the horrible event happening in Rwanda, the media didn’t seem that they didn’t care about this particular genocide.
